Laundry + Peroxide = ?

So, I was sleeping in a little because I didn't feel good this morning! For those who haven't figured it out yet or heard we are expecting baby number 4 sometime in September. Anyway, I got woke up a little because Ben came in and started the washer. The dog had peed in his box and he was washing the towel we had in there. Anyway, I caught him with a bottle of peroxide that he appeared to be trying to add to the wash. I didn't say anything. I just went back to sleep and kind of chuckled to myself. If you don't know his dad, he is always adding ,what seem strange to me, things to laundry. On several occasions he has been known to use pine sol to wash his whites. Well, I have been wondering all day now, and thought I'd bring it to the blog. What benefit would it have to pour peroxide in your washer with your clothes? It just seems to me that it would be so diluted that it wouldn't really do anything. Any ideas out there?

this is so funny. I would have gone crazy at Tra'...haha I think peroxide whitens and removes stains...maybe he heard that a long time ago from his dad and wondered if it really worked?

I think it does help whiten. I'd google it & check it out. I'm definately not an expert (as per my husband) with pink whites or adding detergent on top of clothes & ruining a few lol. I've learned the hard way over time. :)

Guess what - it's a legitimate use!
Also, adding pinesol to laundry that has oil spills & stains(cooking or other) is supposed to help remove it. Strange, but true... just rewash with a better smelling detergent before wearing!

Thanks Kelly! At least I know it's not all some wacky thing in their heads! The grease would make sense why your dad uses it in his laundry. I just always thought it was weird and maybe he was a little full of it. I wonder if Ben knew the peroxide was legit or if he was just doing it to do it?! lol

Have you thought about just asking BEN where he got the idea?

it is so true that our Dad really uses bleach for everything... some of my childhood memories include seeing bleach and baking soda smeared all over the bathroom counter/sink! him dipping/cleaning his arms in bleach water, etc.!
Ben probably has learned a few tricks from him and on his mission, too.

Peroxide eats protein. Protein is found in blood and urine. (most bodily fluids) So adding the peroxide to a garment or in this case towel, will eat the protein out of the item preventing a stain setting in. Now I am not sure why he would add it to the entire machine, diluting it that much will not have the same effect. But, none the less... his efforts were noble. Next time you have a blood stain pour the peroxide right on top, let it sit, then throw it in the wash.

I use peroxide all the time to get blood out of clothes. Andrew cut himself just the other day and dropped blood on his white shirt right before church. In just a few moments, I had the spot out and all was well.

In response to someone's comment, maybe Ben was pouring the peroxide directly on the towel over the washer before tossing it in.

Yeah, I've used Peroxide for blood too, but he was pouring the bottle into the entire water. Not pre-treating. I did ask him why he did it and he said he was using it as a cleaner.
